i'm back

Wow, it's been a long time since I updated the blog. The past few weeks have been a bit of a blur. Not only had I a lot to do at work, followed by a two week vacation, but I was also having some health issues checked out. Luckily, all is okay with me and it's time to get back into the swing of things. I've neglected my blog so much that I probably don't have any loyal readers anymore. I hope to redeem myself in the coming weeks with new posts and a renewed effort to read everyone else's great posts.

Of course, it's very late...actually, now that I just looked at the clock, it's very early. So instead of a full blown post, I'll leave you with this video of our vacation earlier this week. As you'll see, the family had a great time. We stayed at the Catamaran Beach Resort and Spa on Mission Bay. It was nice to escape the heat of Las Vegas.
To all of our American readers, Happy 4th of July. To our Brit friends, no hard feelings, of course.

school, vacation and buffness

It's an exciting day today. In about 20 minutes Z-Dub is returning to school after 6 months at home. I think we're more excited than he is, but at least there's excitement. I know what you're wondering, "why is he starting school in the summer!?!" Actually, it's a summer academy in preparation for preschool in the fall. He's going to have a lot of fun as each week is themed, such as art, music, travel, culture, etc. I'm sure he'll learn a lot. And he's going to have an instant classmate as his cousin is enrolled as well.

HotMomma is looking forward to having a break. Z-Dub has been a handful lately. He needs an outlet for his energy and imagination. School is the perfect place. Besides, when it finally get's Vegas hot (it's been unseasonably cool this June), it's difficult to find things for him to do because outdoors isn't an option during the daylight hours. A lot of the time it's even too hot for swimming in the pool. He can only watch so much Wonder Pets!

---------------------------------------------------------------

You may remember my rant about our elusive vacation. Well, with health issues resolved and two weeks off from work beginning this weekend, I took the plunge and booked us a trip. We're not going to go too far from home, but it's a vacation none-the-less. Z-Dub is going to have a blast here. I'm looking forward to chillaxing on the beach.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Finally, with my renewed workout regimen in full swing with noticeable results, I'll have no issues with being topless on the beach. Queue the paparazzi. By the way, what are your thoughts on manscaping?

the elusive vacation

We need a vacation....badly. I have a week off coming up at the end of June, but we still haven't planned what we're doing. This is mostly due to some medical issues that may need to be addressed during that time. What needs to be done, where and exactly when will not be determined for another few days, so planning has been placed, frustratingly, on hold for now.

We'd like to hop on a plane and head off to an exciting, exotic location, but that probably won't be feasible this year. With Z-Dub's surgery earlier this month and some other medical appointments in the family, we've had to fork out nearly $1,500 to pay insurance deductibles, uninsured diagnostic tests and for prescription medications. Needless to say, it's been one extremely expensive month so far. It's probably going to continue to be as such for the next couples months as well.

If we are able to take some time for a vacation during that week, it'll probably be just a quick trip to our homeland of Southern California -- perhaps San Diego. It'll still be fun, but nothing like last year when we went to Montreal. Speaking of which, I wrote an article for Uptake today about  vacationing in Montreal. Feel free to check it out . It was difficult to write because it made me yearn for a return trip. I definitely want to go back for the Jazz Festival and to see more of the city. Maybe next year.

Anyone else have plans for summer vacation this year? Want to invite a family of four?

a deserving mother

The rules are simple over at Uptake.com -- write a post about why you deserve a “Spa Girl Package” and you can win a trip for four to the Silverado Resort in NapaValley. Despite what some of you may think, based upon what I’ve got going on downstairs I’m definitely not a girl, but HotMomma is. And she’d love a spa getaway with her BFFs. So instead of talking about me, I’m going to deviate from the rules a bit and write about why she deserves to win. Actually, I’m going to give four good (and hopefully compelling) reasons:

1. She's been begging me for a trip to the beautiful Napa Valley and I still haven't come through with my promise to get her there. How many years has it been? Too many to count.

2. The last time I surprised her with a spa treat it turned into a bit of a disaster. Her prized diamond necklace -- a family heirloom that has been passed down three generations -- was lost in the spa and never found. It turned what would have been a relaxing time into one of heartache and tears.

3. Our three year old had surgery last weekend to remove his tonsils, adenoids and get tubes in his ears. He's been in a miserable whiny state ever since. And to make matters worse, he's been treating HotMomma like crap ever since, clingy to his Daddy (yep, me) like a leech and being totally disrespectful to his concerned mother who wants nothing more than to comfort her first born. It's been a bit of a slap in her face and she's feeling down because of it.

4. Mother's Day was a week ago and I still haven't gotten her a gift. Pathetic, I know.

As you can see, HotMomma NEEDS this trip. It will not only provide her an opportunity to rejuvenate, but will also get me out of the dog house. Okay, not completely out of the dog house. Perhaps just one foot. Every little bit helps.

random post about weather and a contest

Like my uber-creative title? I know...it sucks. It's Wednesday and I'm already burnt out from my week, so don't make fun of it.

On to the post. Is it me or is the weather getting freaky? Just two days ago it was in the mid-80s here in Las Vegas. Then the winds came again (they've been a pain in the ass this year) and the weather chilled. Today is supposed to only reach 58. Even more shocking was the fact that when I stepped out the door this morning to head to work it was snowing. Seriously...frickin' snowing in Vegas in mid-April. There's something very wrong with that.

Even more surprising is the fact that the weather predictors are forecasting 90-degree temps by the end of the weekend. It's quite a roller coaster ride going from warm to cold to hot all in the span of a few days. Although I'm not a fan of the cold, I'm definitely not looking forward to the hot weather. I'd like a few weeks in the 70s, like in California. We're going to try to hit Disneyland again next weekend. Hopefully the weather will be perfect.

Speaking of California, the folks over at UpTake are having a contest. You can win a Napa Valley spa vacation for you and three friends. Check out the details here. It's actually really easy to enter, so you'd be a fool not to. I would, if I could. HotMomma would love some girl time in Napa Valley.

can he be anymore excited?

I finally found time to download videos off the camcorder. Here's one of Z-Dub and his cousin Sukita as we were on the bus heading to the main gate of Disneyland.

Disney Vacay Montage

We're back from our short Disneyland vacation to celebrate Z-Dub's third birthday. It was a fun and exhausting trip and Z-Dub had a blast. We took hundreds of photos, of course, but I thought I'd share just a few. I'm playing catch-up at work today and will be back to regular posting (and reading) tomorrow. In the meantime, enjoy!!!

Ready for blast off!
Z-Dub's shirt says "Big Brother: Honor and Defend" and The Deuce's says "Little Brother: Search and Destroy."
Mom and son.
A Goofy encounter.
Excited for Autopia.
Sukita (cousin) and Z-Dub.
Still in line.
HotMomma and cousin DP.
HotMomma and her cousins from Sactown and little DP at Space Mountain.
HotMomma and me.
What's Z-Dub looking at? Perhaps the giant, talking Buzz Lightyear.
Goofing off.
The teacups at night. I couldn't catch a photo of Z-Dub riding. It was too fast for the camera at night.
The Deuce and his Auntie.
Enjoying the fireworks.
The fireworks.
Z-Dub shows off one of his Birthday presents.
Also, Z-Dub refers to Donald Duck as "Donald THE Duck." It's funny when he says it.

And, finally, we fly a lot, but the short 36-minute flight home from SNA to LAS was one of the scariest we've ever experienced on account of the wind. HotMomma was reciting Hail Mary's as I sat in my chair with   white knuckles. Luckily we all made it home in one piece.

leavin' on a jet plane...

We're off to the airport this morning to catch a short flight (a hop really) to John Wayne Airport in Orange County. With the kids in tow, we're heading to nearby Anaheim for a very special Disneyland weekend. Z-Dud is excited to see his buddies Mickey, Goofy, Donald, Pluto and the rest of the Disney gang.

Fun times will be had by all and photos will be captured. I can't wait to share. Until then, "hot diggity dog" we're out of here.

snow!

It is snowing. Not just flurries, it's actually snowing here in Vegas. This marks the first time in my life that I've actually seen snow fall from the sky. I know, it's weird. I'm from the California coast and it doesn't snow there.

HotMomma and Z-Dub are at home having some fun in the snow as we speak. It's Z-Dub's first time ever  seeing snow, so he's having a blast. They're taking plenty of pictures and I can't wait to share them later.

heading back to work

My time off for the birth of Z-Jay is coming to an end. I can't believe I go back to work on Monday after nearly two weeks of absence. I'm not looking forward to the overflowing e-mail inbox and the voicemails awaiting my return. It'll probably take me the entire day to play catch up.

I've enjoyed my two weeks off, although they've been exhausting. I forgot about the sleep deprivation that comes with having a newborn. Beginning Monday, it's going to be especially hard to get up for work and also help out in the early morning hours.. Luckily this period of frequent late night feedings and diaper changes won't last too long.

To help out, Z-Dub is off to San Diego with his cousins. He'll be gone all week. He left at around 2 p.m. today and we miss him already. I'm sure he misses us and his brother too.

Now Back to My Post
HotMomma went Christmas gift shopping for the kids at midnight on Friday and again at 5 a.m. Luckily, now we're pretty much done with all the gift buying for the holiday season. We just have one more gift to buy. We're doing a Secret Santa type gift exchange with her family this year. It takes a lot of stress off of everyone. If we hadn't set it up, we'd have a lot of people to buy for.

burnt to a crisp

I failed to wear a hat or apply sunscreen while at SeaWorld on Saturday in San Diego and at a family party at a park in Oceanside on Sunday. They were two long days outdoors in the California sun. Needless to say, I'm paying for my mistake now. I don't think I've ever been burnt this bad before. To say I'm in pain is an understatement. My noggin is even starting to blister.

I'm also embarrassed to say that I look absolutely ridiculous. My shiny red head looks like some kind of warning beacon that can be seen from miles away. I might as well be turned into a bouy.

Don't believe me?

Check it out...

Oh, to make matters worse, I have raccoon eyes.

weekend in pictures

We're back from our weekend adventure in Southern California. While it was a blast, it's good to be home to sleep in our own beds. Hopefully I'll be able to sleep despite my severly sunburnt noggin. It's late and I'm too tired for a play by play of the entire weekend, so instead I thought I'd post a photo montage of Saturday at Seaworld and Sunday at a birthday party for Z-Dub's cousin Belle and friend T. Enjoy!

a desert trek

This weekend we'll pack up the Highlander and embark on a great journey across the Mojave Desert and into the Los Angeles Basin as we travel to San Diego for a weekend getaway.

Am I looking forward to going to San Diego? Yes, of course. Am I looking forward to driving to our destination? Hell frickin' no. I can't remember the last time we made our way to Southern California in a car. We're airplane people. I really prefer the 48 minute flight over the five hour drive. It's long, boring and exhausting.

To make matters worse, it's not very scenic. There's brown mountains and harsh, empty desert as far as the eye can see. Of course, there is the World's Tallest Thermometer in the crap hole town of Baker, about 100 south of Las Vegas. You also pass an occasional trailer or shanty home surrounded by a chain linked fence and a yard full of old, rusty cars. Seriously, why do rural desert people collect junk? And where do they get all of it? Obviously, I'm not going to stop and inquire. I've seen too many horror flicks to know what might happen.

We're heading to San Diego to visit HotMomma's sister's family. It's our niece's birthday celebration. Also, HotMomma's sister borrowed much of our "baby stuff" after she gave birth to our niece. Now, obviously, we need all of it back, hence the reason for driving instead of flying.

Since we'll be in San Diego, on Saturday we are going to take Z-Dub to SeaWorld for the first time. He loves marine life, so we can't wait to see his reaction to Shamu and all the animals. It's going to be exciting and make the trip totally worth the drive.

university of never leaving vegas

Twelve years ago this month I packed my car full of my belongings and set out on a quest to fulfill my educational goals.

I didn't have much going on at the time. I was just going through the motions, with little progress made in building a stable life. I had completed more than two years of general education requirements at community colleges in Southern California and took a little more than two years off to work at the former Surfer Publications, publishers of Surfer, Snowboarder, Powder, Skateboarder and Bike magazines in San Juan Capistrano. During that time I was also one of the very first employees at a Capistrano Beach advertising agency that served clients in the action sports industry. Both jobs were incredibly fun, but neither paid much. I was barely able to feed myself and I was tired of renting rooms from other people. I knew that in order to get into a good place financially, I needed to finally earn a college degree.

With the car packed, I left my native California and drove across the Mojave Desert into Nevada to attend UNLV. It wasn't my first choice in a long list of colleges to which I applied and got accepted. Among them was Boston University. I actually got accepted and received a substantial scholarship, but I still couldn't afford the remaining tuition. The same went for University of Tampa and Colorado State University. All I knew is I wanted to go to college outside of California and it had to be someplace where job opportunities were plentiful, because I had to work my way through school. UNLV was out-of-state, but close enough for weekend visits back home.

The city was booming and had plenty of jobs for hungry college students. Las Vegas turned out to be a good choice for me and I sailed through my classes and completed a B.A. in communications, with an emphasis in public relations and a minor in English. During my time there I also had two to three jobs at any given time. They included the college newspaper, a local television station, casino, restaurants and health club. I was a jack of all trades. I look back now and I can't imagine how I survived all of it. I'm exhausted just thinking about my 18-hour days.

Upon graduation I promptly returned to Southern California and landed a job with a prestigious public relations/affairs agency that had offices throughout the state. I spent nearly two years there gaining valuable experience and working on some interesting and often controversial clients. But returning to California was hard. It's expensive there and I continued to struggle financially. It was only a matter of time before I made a decision to return to Las Vegas, where, at the time, life was much easier.

And there is where we get the phrase "UNLV - university of never leaving Vegas." Well, at least for me. There are many different reasons why people use the term. Mine is simple. I have left this city and returned so many times. It's like a giant magnet that keeps pulling me back. Twelve years after first moving here I often drive down Interstate 15, which runs below the towering hotel/casinos along the world famous Las Vegas Strip, and I think to myself "holy crap, I live in Vegas."

Who knew I would end up in the Sin City, married, owning a home and raising a family? Twelve years later it's still strange to me, but at the same time surprisingly comfortable. I guess we're here to stay...at least until the water runs out.

jack and the beanstalk

Every night we have family reading time where we read to Z-Dub and he attempts to read to us. With some of his books being read over and over again, early this week HotMomma decided it was time to head to the local branch of the library with Z-Dub to check out some new books from the children's collection.

Last night I joined Z-Dub in reading the classic Jack and the Beanstalk. Most of us have heard the story, but it wasn't until I read it to Z-Dub that I realized how ridiculously inappropriate the story is for a child. How you may ask? Well, let me tell you.

First, I find it incredibly irresponsible that Jack's widowed mother makes him go to town to trade in their only milk cow for some food. Seems like a short-term solution to a long-term problem. It lacks any forward thinking, or logic for that matter. If you have no food at all, why don't you get a job or grow something? Perhaps you'd even get more out of butchering that cow than trading it in. Equating it to today, it's like trading your car for some quick cash at one of those title loan places. How in the hell are you going to get a job and better your situation if you've traded in your transportation for a quick fix? Not a good lesson.

Second, Jack totally defies his mother's orders and trades their only cow for a few beans from a strange man on the side of the road. Two things are wrong with this with the first being that he didn't listen to his mother. Second, he talked to a stranger and accepted his offer. It's like taking candy from a molester or drugs from a dealer.

Third, after the beans grow up into a giant stalk reaching into the clouds, Jack climbs up upon a castle that's home to a giant. The giant says, "Fee! Fie! Foe! Fum!?? I smell the blood of an Englishman. Be he 'live, or be he dead, I'll grind his bones to make my bread." It's a little gruesome for little kids, but it is a giant and Jack did break into his castle, so who can blame him. But after hiding out like a crafty cat burglar and avoiding being eaten by the giant Jack steals his gold egg laying hen and heads home to enjoy his new found riches. So, it's okay to break into a strangers home and steal?

Fourth, getting greedy Jack goes back up the beanstalk and to the giant's castle to steal again. The second time it was a magic harp. But Jack gets caught by the giant who chases him down that stalk to reclaim his stuff. To "get away with it," Jack uses an axe to quickly knock down the stalk, resulting in the poor giant plunging to his death. Apparently the lesson learned is when you get caught committing a petty crime, to avoid punishment you should kill your victim. Nice.

I realize this book was an adaptation of the original and may not be as you remember it, but still it's severly lacking in morality. The only things that would make this book even more inappropriate or controversial are:

Jacks mother starts turning tricks to make some quick cash. Jack acts as her pimp.

Jack grows some pot and sells in on a street corner in town. When he gets caught by the police he claims it's "for medicinal purposes." When pressed further he kills the cop to avoid arrest.

Jack and his mother are so hungry they cook up and eat the dead giant's body. I'm sure Andrew Zimmern wouldn't even eat it.

Jack and the giant clear up their differences, and instead of the giant being killed, they fall in love and have a gay wedding in California. It certainly would make it more interesting.

quick turn cali trip

We flew to John Wayne airport in Orange County, Calif. yesterday morning to drop Z-Dub off to HotMomma's sister's house in North County San Diego. We already flew home to Las Vegas this morning. The travel was a bit of a whirlwind over the past 24 hours. We need some rest before we jet off to Montreal tomorrow morning.

In the meantime, although we love and miss our native California, here's the reason I don't live there anymore.

That's the bumper to bumper, barely moving an inch, traffic on southbound Interstate 5, just past the Camino Las Ramblas/Pacific Coast Highway exit in Dana Point. That's at 2:30 p.m. on a Saturday. Is there ever not traffic there anymore?

But there was some fun during our travels south to NCSD. We stopped at the Irvine Spectrum for lunch. Z-Dub had an opportunity to play in the fountains with some kids and ride a carousel and giant ferris wheel. He had a blast.

Of course, we already miss him as we're in a quiet house, packing and preparing for our early morning departure. I think tonight is going to be tough.
